Food Sovereignty and Water Care Led by Women and Youth from Peri-Urban Neighborhoods of District 7 in the Municipality of Viacha

Justification

The identified problems are as follows: Families in peri-urban areas facing food insecurity, who also struggle with issues related to water scarcity, in an environment where violence against women is present. Youth and students experience malnutrition and have limited knowledge about the importance of healthy eating, water care, and caring for their environment.

Objectives

General objective: Women and young students from peri-urban neighborhoods of District 7 in the municipality of Viacha strengthen their food sovereignty, water care, and empowerment.

Specific objective: Women, young students, and local authorities advocate for and exercise their right to healthy food by implementing agroecological productive initiatives within a framework of water care, with a gender, intergenerational, and climate-resilience approach in the peri-urban areas of Viacha.

Activities:

  • Implementation, equipment, monitoring, and technical assistance for 6 school agroecological teaching gardens (4 new) and 3 healthy food kiosks (2 new) in 3 Educational Units.
  • Training workshops on agroecological practices and nutritious healthy eating, including the preparation of vegetable-based products, for teachers, school councils, and parents of 3 Educational Units.
  • Theoretical-practical workshops on agroecological production, food transformation, and healthy eating for primary and secondary students in 3 Educational Units.
  • Educational fairs on agroecological production and healthy eating in 3 Educational Units.
  • Training modules for young students as agroecological brigades for water care and care for our common home in 3 Educational Units.
  • Action campaigns for water care and care for our common home in 3 Educational Units.
  • Experience exchanges with youth: 2 on sustainable agrifood systems and 2 on water care and care for our common home.
  • Artistic workshops (theater) to raise awareness about water care and care for our common home in 3 Educational Units.
  • Equipment for the implementation of the gastronomy specialization in the 14 de Noviembre Educational Unit.
  • Construction, equipment, implementation, and technical assistance for 50 agroecological gardens with women and their families, and follow-up for 30 existing family gardens.
  • Workshops on agroecological practices, healthy eating, vegetable-based food processing, water-related issues, and water footprint for both new and existing producer families at the Wali Sumita Agroecological School.
  • Experience exchanges on agroecological production with producer families.
  • Local peri-urban fairs for the marketing of vegetables and processed products.
