Rehabilitation of Vulnerable Homes

PRO TERRA SANCTA

Background Information

The current war with Israel, although primarily affecting the population of Gaza, is also having dramatic consequences in the Bethlehem Governorate. According to a report from the International Labour Organization (ILO) in November 2023, the war destroyed 61% of employment in the Gaza Strip (182,000 jobs) in just one month, but also 24% in the West Bank (208,000 jobs). As a result, all tourism activity in Bethlehem has disappeared once again, and additionally, the inability to leave has caused many Palestinians who worked in Jerusalem or in the various settlements around the Governorate to lose their jobs. The war, unemployment, low wages, and rising prices make daily life extremely difficult for families, who find themselves unable to cover any extraordinary expenses, such as high medical costs or basic housing maintenance.
