Background Information

This proposal arises from the demands of the producer families of the 10 Subcentralia de Peaña communities. with the specific needs of men and women being clearly differentiated.  It fosters the participation of the communal authorities, peasant social organizations, women’s organizations and TKPI personnel, based on a the results of a workshop carried out in December 2021, where the major problem was identified as following: “The high prevalence of malnutrition in indigenous peasant families [where the child population (boys and girls under 5 years of age),  women pregnant women and the elderly are prioritized] that fosters their physical and intellectual growth, thus guaranteeing a more promising future for new generations, by confronting  the negative effects of  the food and environmental crisis caused by the pandemic and climate change”.

Goals

Overall goal: Reduce poverty and social exclusion among the peasant population in the Peaña communities of the Ocuri municipality by enabling women to fully exercise their  rights and providing food security with an emphasis on gender equality and environmental sustainability in times of pandemics.

Specific goal:

Enhance  food sovereignty and local economic and sustainable development, enabling the peasant families from the Peaña communities to successfully confront  health, economic and environmental crises. This can be acheived by developing the capabilities for  production, leadership, entrepreneurship and sustainable productive economic initiatives of women and groups of both sexes, with equal  participation of public and private local activists and the aim of having a noticeable impact on  public policies.

Activities:

  • Identification and selection of women leaders for defending women´s rights.
  • Holding leadership training workshops for personal development and the defense of human rights.
  • Fostering mobilizations and meetings of women leaders in defense of women´s rights.
  • Workshops for training families in agroecological production (crops, vegetables, fruit trees), conservation of natural resources (water, plants, soil) with mitigation/adaptation measures to confront the effects of climate change and enhance social and environmental resilience to the pandemic.
  • Agroecological production of crops, vegetables, fruit trees with the participation of women.
  • Installation of tanks, sprinkler irrigation, local nurseries, protection of food plots with seedlings and training in their installation, use and maintenance.
  • Training workshops for nutritional food practices to diversify the family diet with high nutritional value.
  • Implementation, renovation and equipment of productive enterprises managed by women and groups of mixed sexes.
  • Participation and development of fairs for the sale of beekeeping, artisan, bakery-confectionery products and the revaluation and recovery of their cultural identity and gastronomy.
